Synopsis

Big Data is making its way into all industries, and the Canadian health care system is no exception. The General Internal Medicine Inpatient (GEMINI) Project is a large undertaking, bringing together electronic patient data on all general medicine admission data from seven different hospitals. The data gained will be invaluable in improving hospital care, especially for older complex patients. It has been found that 75% of individuals over the age of 75 have at least 2 chronic medical conditions, and their care accounts for 80% of overall health care costs. When hospitalized, these patients are often treated on general medicine wards, and general medicine inpatients account for between 30-50% of all admissions to hospitals through the emergency room. Of these patients, 1 in 5 will die or have an unexpected return to hospital within 30 days of discharge. So what's next for big data in health care? How could this information help to further improve our health system? This webinar will feature Dr. Fahad Razak and Dr. Amol Verma from St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Using GEMINI as a case study, Fahad and Amol will describe the technical and legislative challenges facing health care professionals when repurposing enormous amount of electronic data generated for secondary applications such as business analytics, quality improvement and research, and improving population health outcomes and health care system sustainability.
