“If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson

Synopsis

Creating robust artificial intelligence is one of the greatest challenges for game developers. AI is increasingly important to games, and a game's commercial success is often dependent on the quality of the AI. However, AI is still not well understood by many developers, and it is often tacked on late in the development process. There remains tremendous room to improve the quality of AI in games. In his new book, Ian Millington brings extensive professional experience to this problem. A game developer since 1987, he was founder of Mindlathe Ltd., at the time the largest specialist AI company in gaming. Ian shows how to think about AI concepts from the start as an integral part of the game play, describes numerous examples from real games, and explores these ideas in-depth through detailed case studies. Plentiful C++ source code examples are included on the CD-ROM to illustrate implementation. He goes further to introduce many techniques currently unknown to developers, and discusses types of AI specific to different genres of games, such as driving or sports games. * A comprehensive, professional tutorial and reference to implement true AI in games written by an engineer with extensive industrial experience. * Walks through the entire development process from beginning to end. * Includes examples from over 100 real games, 10 in-depth case studies, and CD-ROM with sample code.

Synopsis

Digital Photography and Everyday Life: Empirical studies on material visual practices explores the role that digital photography plays within everyday life. With contributors from ten different countries and backgrounds in a range of academic disciplines - including anthropology, media studies and visual culture - this collection takes a uniquely broad perspective on photography by situating the image-making process in wider discussions on the materiality and visuality of photographic practices and explores these through empirical case studies. By focusing on material visual practices, the book presents a comprehensive overview of some of the main challenges digital photography is bringing to everyday life. It explores how the digitization of photography has a wide-reaching impact on the use of the medium, as well as on the kinds of images that can be produced and the ways in which camera technology is developed. The exploration goes beyond mere images to think about cameras, mediations and technologies as key elements in the development of visual digital cultures. Digital Photography and Everyday Life will be of great interest to students and scholars of Photography, Contemporary Art, Visual Culture and Media Studies, as well as those studying Communication, Cultural Anthropology, and Science and Technology Studies.

“Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.” –P.J. O’Rourke

Synopsis

In an 1828 letter to his partner Nicephore Niepce, Louis Daguerre wrote, |I am burning with desire to see your experiments from nature.| In this book, Geoffrey Batchen analyzes the desire to photograph as it emerged within the philosophical and scientific milieus that preceded the actual invention of photography. Recent accounts of photography's identity tend to divide between the postmodern view that all identity is determined by context and a formalist effort to define the fundamental characteristics of photography as a medium. Batchen critiques both approaches by way of a detailed discussion of photography's conception in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In this refiguring of the traditional story of photography's origins, Batchen examines the output of the various nominees for |first photographer, | then incorporates this information into a mode of historical criticism informed by the work of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. The result is a way of thinking about photography that persuasively accords with the medium's undeniable conceptual, political, and historical complexity.

“If you love books enough, books will love you back.” –Jo Walton

Synopsis

Big Data is making its way into all industries, and the Canadian health care system is no exception. The General Internal Medicine Inpatient (GEMINI) Project is a large undertaking, bringing together electronic patient data on all general medicine admission data from seven different hospitals. The data gained will be invaluable in improving hospital care, especially for older complex patients. It has been found that 75% of individuals over the age of 75 have at least 2 chronic medical conditions, and their care accounts for 80% of overall health care costs. When hospitalized, these patients are often treated on general medicine wards, and general medicine inpatients account for between 30-50% of all admissions to hospitals through the emergency room. Of these patients, 1 in 5 will die or have an unexpected return to hospital within 30 days of discharge. So what's next for big data in health care? How could this information help to further improve our health system? This webinar will feature Dr. Fahad Razak and Dr. Amol Verma from St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Using GEMINI as a case study, Fahad and Amol will describe the technical and legislative challenges facing health care professionals when repurposing enormous amount of electronic data generated for secondary applications such as business analytics, quality improvement and research, and improving population health outcomes and health care system sustainability.

“Books serve to show a man that those original thoughts of his aren’t very new after all.” -Abraham Lincoln

Synopsis

Video games have developed into a rich, growing field at many top universities, but they have rarely been considered from a queer perspective. Immersion in new worlds, video games seem to offer the perfect opportunity to explore the alterity that queer culture longs for, but often sexism and discrimination in gamer culture steal the spotlight. Queer Game Studies provides a welcome corrective, revealing the capacious albeit underappreciated communities that are making, playing, and studying queer games. These in-depth, diverse, and accessible essays use queerness to challenge the ideas that have dominated gaming discussions. Demonstrating the centrality of LGBTQ issues to the gamer world, they establish an alternative lens for examining this increasingly important culture. Queer Game Studies covers important subjects such as the representation of queer bodies, the casual misogyny prevalent in video games, the need for greater diversity in gamer culture, and reading popular games like Bayonetta, Mass Effect, and Metal Gear Solid from a queer perspective. Perfect for both everyday readers and instructors looking to add diversity to their courses, Queer Game Studies is the ideal introduction to the vast and vibrant realm of queer gaming. “So many books, so little time.” -Frank Zappa

Synopsis

We used to think that video games were mostly for young men, but with the success of the Nintendo Wii, and the proliferation of games in browsers, cell phone games, and social games video games changed changed fundamentally in the years from 2000 to 2010. These new casual games are now played by men and women, young and old. Players need not possess an intimate knowledge of video game history or devote weeks or months to play. At the same time, many players of casual games show a dedication and skill that is anything but casual. In A Casual Revolution, Jesper Juul describes this as a reinvention of video games, and of our image of video game players, and explores what this tells us about the players, the games, and their interaction. With this reinvention of video games, the game industry reconnects with a general audience. Many of today's casual game players once enjoyed Pac-Man, Tetris, and other early games, only to drop out when video games became more time-consuming and complex. Juul shows that it is only by understanding what a game requires of players, what players bring to a game, how the game industry works, and how video games have developed historically that we can understand what makes video games fun and why we choose to play (or not to play) them. “I often carry things to read so that I will not have to look at people.” –Charles Bukowski

Synopsis

Museums and Photography combines a strong theoretical approach with international case studies to investigate the display of death in various types of museums—history, anthropology, art, ethnographic, and science museums – and to understand the changing role of photography in museums. Contributors explore the politics and poetics of displaying death, and more specifically, the role of photography in representing and interpreting this difficult topic. Working with nearly 20 researchers from different cultural backgrounds and disciplines, the editors critically engage the recent debate on the changing role of museums, exhibition meaning-making, and the nature of photography. They offer new ways for understanding representational practices in relation to contemporary visual culture. This book will appeal to researchers and museum professionals, inspiring new thinking about death and the role of photography in making sense of it.

“Drink deeply from good books.” -John Wooden

Synopsis

This inspirational memoir, told with uncensored Southern wit and guidance, recounts the story of a Hollywood film executive who journeys through the cosmic wilderness and, against all odds, discovers psychic superpowers that radically transform her life. As a senior executive at one of the world’s largest movie studios, Julie Rieger spent her days marketing the imaginary stories of ghosts, faeries, superheroes, aliens, and more fantastical creatures. But after the devastating loss of her mother, the world of make-believe became reality when Julie captured her first ghost in a photograph and blew open a door to the Other Side. The Ghost Photographer chronicles Julie’s wild ride down the spiritual rabbit hole. After a series of unexpected, mind-blowing, and sometimes frightening encounters with the spirit realm, Julie was forced to face this strange awakening, flying in the face of scientific dogma and her own die-hard skepticism. Ultimately, she discovered that what she thought she had lost with the death of her mother—unconditional love—was in fact the greatest superpower one can wield. In a refreshing departure from traditional supernatural tales, Julie tells her story with bold humor and total candor. Her journey juxtaposes her down-home roots in rural America with the glam of Hollywood and her professional universe of hard, empirical data. As she fine-tunes her psychic abilities and comes to terms with the transformative power of grief, Julie is empowered to fearlessly tell her story, teach others, and invite them to share their own experiences of the paranormal and unexplained. She offers insights into our relationship with the spirit world, prayers and rituals for cleansing and protecting our homes from unwanted ghosts, and guidance on how to develop our intuition and sixth sense.
